Notice Lisa’s green eyes match the green nail polish that match the green frames of the sunglasses. I’m sure you did. Just a fun session that gave the model an opportunity to whatever she wanted. High key shooting makes it easy to composite various images, especially when you get lots of images you like.

More Mirror Shots

A few more mirror shots. Created using a photogenic spoke-less umbrealla for a main light positioned directly at the vortex where the model met the frame of the mirror. A small 12″x12″ softbox was positioned high at the right rear corner of the set for a hair light. To cut down on the clutter in the background of the reflected image a black out was used positioned directly behind the model. The mirror measures approximately 3′ x 4′ and has a wide 4″ flat frame all the way around it. painted black.

A simple casual shoot conducted mostly in the shade to get out of the hot overhead direct mid day sun. Outdoor shots exposed at f8 using flash off camera out fitted with a 16′ silver reflector . Shutter speed varied between 60th to 1/125th depending on the background scene brightness..

Shot on a mildly overcast morning using the surrounding gardens and white reflective building. Flash off camera remotely fired with pocket wizard. Mild post production using Mama Shan’s’ powder at 55% opacity. Safe to say the model and makeup artist did all the work here, I just clicked the shutter..

From the May 15th workshop. White poly-canvass backdrop lit with two heads outfitted with barndoors to control flare. All models were lit with a single soft silver spokless umbrella at paramount position. Placed just to the left is a four foot square piece of white plexi glass suspended vertically on a light stand.Easy to work with soft light. Great models – great MUAs. AAA+

This girl came to model. Lots of outfits and ideas produced all kinds of results both indoor and out. So many that I had to make up composites to include them all. Carly’s enthusiasm and imagination makes a photographers’ job easy to get great shots.

High Key Samples from April 10

Here’s a few high key samples from the April 10, 2010 Workshop. As a test, for background material a piece of white 9×12 ”poly-canvass” was substituted for muslin with good results. It’s heavier and denser than muslin featuring a tight weave and a thin foam backing similar to what you’d expect to find in drapery materials. All models were at least 8 feet forward the background lit with a head on either side one slightly higher than the other, a full stop brighter than the subject. To complete this setup, the acrylic lens will be replaced with a piece of pure white plexi-glass to rid the images of the graying that occurs at the horizon…. see images below of Ashley and Kristen.

Seperation with Gels

Dark backgrounds are my preference but a plain muslin is just plain boring. For this shoot a coloured gel was placed on a head on either side of the background one a little higher than the other. Dalia is standing almost a full ten feet in front of the black muslin lit with a 5′ octabox to the left of camera position. A small softbox high up on a stand behind her right was used as a hair light. See the photo at the bottom of the post for a better idea.

Setting this up for optimum saturation was a bit
tricky. The muslin is almost pitch black, and the amount of
ambient light was high. I asked Joe Leduc of Fun Freestyle
Photography for some pointers and here’s what he
had to say…..

I love the variety gels provide. Mid tone and dark tone backgrounds work best and the exposure through each colour is not consistent because of filter opacity. I find that if I want deep saturation of colour I read minus one stop over my main and try to keep ambient light off he background and just hit the background with concentrated colour.

The depth in lighting pops the model right off the background and adds impact. I also often add a gel to noseam backgrounds like red and blue to really add saturation and impact.
