Shot on a mildly overcast morning using the surrounding gardens and white reflective building. Flash off camera remotely fired with pocket wizard. Mild post production using Mama Shan’s’ powder at 55% opacity. Safe to say the model and makeup artist did all the work here, I just clicked the shutter..

March 6, 2010 Favorites from Norm’s Photo Workshop
As usual, great models, Make-Up Artists and setups for shooting. For a chabge I decided to develop a page template to assemble the composties in about a third of the time it would take if done manually. The first 6 comps were created using the same template. That should be obvious by the layout and the identical charcoal gray background. Once post production has been done on the selected images it’s a simple matter of changing the content. Templates are Photoshop document files (.psd) and each image on the template is “placed” as a “smart object”. This technique is the foundation of many book-publishing programs and is favorite of wedding photographers that often must put numerous pages together to create an ablbum.

Favorite Mirror Shots

Lots of work to set up but very simple to light. A large 3×4 foot mirror is suspended on a heavy duty light stand and clamped down with a grip head. The mirror has a 4″ wide flat frame all around it. All shots done against a black background with a black-out hung dirctly across from the model to fill in the reflection behind her.

3 lights, two 4′ spokless umbrellas (main and fill) and a tiny soft box hair light boomed above. Studio and location.

Simple 3 light setup, 5′ Octabox for Main Light, 4′ Umbrella for Fill Light, and a small 200 ws strobe fitted with 30 degree grid directly behind the model. My favorite setup, shot against a simple black twill backdrop.

Window as Background

Michelle is standing about 3 feet infront of the window behind her. The bright sunlight is shining directly on the tree leaves outdoor creating an ideal green backdrop. For the model a slight amount of fill was used by way of a flash mounted directly on the camera outfitted with a Fong dome.

All of the images shown here of the models was been created with simple window light. In most cases a white reflector was brought in very close from the left for fill. Shooting was done from the extreme right with the camera right up against the wall.

Opposite Colours

To offset the rich colour of Victoria’s outfit I used a strobe placed directly behind her head equipped with an orange gel. A fan on low power was used to create movement in her hair.

Running out of ideas, model getting bored, then grab a prop to add some interest. You’ll be surprised how much variety it adds to the shoot.

Classic Look

I liked this models look so much that when I was done with the colour images I decided to convert them to black and white and compare them side by side to see the what the difference might be.
